New Documentary Photography

Contemporary Photography X

February 22, 2022

Join us for an online conversation between Alex Klein, Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, and José Castrellón and Maggie Shannon, the winning artists of TILT’s Contemporary Photography Competition & Exhibition X, an initiative to recognize and support artists who are ready to launch new, innovative projects.

José Castrellón works with photography, video, found material and language, moving between the conceptual and documentary realms. Castrellón’s portraits and landscapes in “Apocalipsis en Solentiname” are created in conversation with the people living in an artist enclave in Nicaragua, founded by Ernesto Cardenal in 1965.

Maggie Shannon is a photographer specializing in portrait and documentary work. For her project “Extreme Pain, But Also Extreme Joy”, Shannon photographed midwives in Los Angeles and rural Michigan as they navigate new protocols caused by the Covid19 pandemic. Shannon’s photographs convey what it means to bear life in times of sorrow.

Alex Klein is the Dorothy and Stephen R. Weber (CHE’60) Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania.

Castrellón and Shannon’s work will be on view at TILT’s Gallery February 10 – March 26, 2022.
