Overcoming narratives of people with disabilities saturate our media. Photographs of disabled people frequently aim to over-emphasize ordinary experiences or create sympathy to give the viewer “the feels” without considering the broader social construction of disability that plays into this sort of image-making. Dianna Temple has always been a part of the disability community as a caregiver and advocate for my older sister. Dianna will share reflect how she uses photography to question ideas of representation and how our built environment isolates people with disabilities. As an able-bodied photographer, she collaborates with people with disabilities in an attempt to see the social constructs of disability in our world and create imagery that can build new conversations.
Dianna Temple is an artist, occupational therapist, and disability advocate. Her work explores disability through the lens of the Social Model of Disability that emphasizes social, political, and environmental barriers for people with disabilities. Currently she an adjunct instructor for North Central State College in digital photography, and an Individual Consultant for the Richland County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
