Pete Pin will present his current project tentatively titled I Am Here With You Now, which explores themes of loss, memory, migration, and inter-generational divide. Since 2018, Pete has traveled extensively across Cambodia in search of his family – unearthing their lives from before, during, and after the Killing Fields – and meeting estranged family members scattered across the country. Primarily using a traditional large-format wooden camera, he found and photographed family members including his father with whom he has been estranged from for over twenty years, siblings whom he met for the first time, and sites of memory where his maternal and paternal families’ lives unfolded amidst peace, war, internal migration, and genocide. Pete will discuss this project and the challenges of unearthing buried ancestral histories through image-making.
Pete Pin was born in the Khao-I-Dang refugee camp on the border of Cambodia and Thailand in 1982. His family were resettled as refugees in Stockton, California in the 1980’s. As such, Pin’s work explores themes of memory, migration, and inter-generational trauma among the Cambodian American community across the United States and among his own family in the U.S. and Cambodia. Previously a high school drop-out, Pin is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he did Honors and was awarded the Louis and Charles Outstanding Honors Thesis Award, and the International Center of Photography. He received fellowships and grants from the Magnum Foundation and Open Society Foundations Photography Project, among others, and has been featured in the New York Times, TIME Magazine, NPR, and VICE, among others. Pin was one of PPAC’s 2019 Artist-In-Residence. He lives in Brooklyn, NY and Phnom Penh, Cambodia with his wife, writer, and journalist Jane Rose Porter.
