Oh, Snap! with Danna Singer

May 16, 2020
10:30 am - 12:30 pm EST

Danna Singer, an assignment photographer and fine artist, will present pieces from several projects and discuss her work as an editor. Danna’s work depicts the struggle of working class Americans and explores the social ramifications of economic equality. “I hope that my work communicates the weight and depth of the psychological damage that exists when one is trapped in cycles that lack opportunity and possibility,” Danna says. “I want my pictures to show the destructiveness of classism, the claustrophobia of these places and the grace that can be expressed in spite of it all.”

Danna Singer is a photographer and educator. She received her MFA from Yale University School of Art and BFA from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Singer’s work largely focuses on the social ramifications of economic inequality, depicting the struggles of working class Americans. Her photographs were selected for The Best New Yorker Photography of 2019, and The New York Times, Year in Pictures 2019, and have been published by Der Spiegel, the ACLU, Lens Culture, LensScratch, Feature Shoot, and The New York Times Magazine. In 2020 she was named a Guggenheim Fellow and in 2018, she was awarded a residency fellowship at Yaddo and named one of PDN’s 30 Emerging Photographers to Watch. She received the John Ferguson Weir Award, Yale University (2017), the Schickle-Collingwood Prize, Yale University (2016), and the Juncture Fellowship, Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights/Yale Law School (2016). Her photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Oh, Snap! is a monthly lecture and workshop series that provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment in which to learn about photography and artistic practice.

Oh, Snap! brings together people of diverse backgrounds and experiences. Lectures and workshops are curated in conjunction with the interests of its participants. Photography provides a starting point, but the conversations sparked by Oh, Snap! are interdisciplinary and deep. No experience with photography is required; all participants need is an interest in the medium and a willingness to connect with other people who are passionate about the arts. Please contact coordinator Lori Waselchuk with any questions at lori@philaphotoarts.org.
