Renee Maria Osubu will be in conversation with Will Toms – Co Founder of Rec Philly, a creative incubator for artists working in the digital arts, and Mel Wells – President/CEO of One Day at a Time, a residential peer counseling and substance abuse recovery support program located in North Philadelphia. Osubu will share her insights behind the creative process for Dear Philadelphia, an immersive interdisciplinary exhibition involving photography, video, and interviews. In preparation for the project, Osubu established personal connections with North Philadelphia residents, including Toms and Wells who grew up in the neighborhood.

Panelists Biographies

Renee Maria Osubu

Renee Maria Osubu is an award-winning British Nigerian photographer and film director from London. She often investigates themes about community, identity, race, and childhood, using the nuances of everyday life as her visual language. Osubu is best known for her on-going photography series Dear Philadelphia, which is on view at TILT from May 9 – June 29, 2024. 

Will Toms

Will Toms is a visionary entrepreneur, TED Speaker, and member of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2021. Currently, Toms is the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of REC Philly. In addition to running a multi-million dollar company, he serves on the board of three non-profit organizations fighting structural inequality and food insecurity in inner-city neighborhoods.

Mel Wells

Mel Wells is the President and Chief Executive Officer of One Day at a Time (ODAAT). For over 40 years, ODAAT has been dedicated to serving low-income and unhoused individuals and their families in the Philadelphia area affected by addiction and HIV/AIDS. ODAAT also focuses on building stronger communities through its anti-violence and recovery initiatives.
