Composition is a life time study for all visual artists. This class will cover advanced techniques used by visual artist throughout history and into the modern photography era, including: the basic visual elements: line, form, shape, depth, perspective, scale, tonality, texture and scale. We’ll take a deep dive into ways visual artist divide up their canvas or viewfinder to organize the frame: rule of thirds, Golden Ratio, Golden Mean, Dynamic Symmetry, Fibonacci Sequence, and many more ideas for organizing the frame. We’ll also look at the seminal ideas introduced by Gestalt psychology, including: Proximity, Similarity, Closure, Good continuation, Common fate, Good form. We’ll explore Japanese Principles of organizing images as well as classical composition techniques used by the great painters, which are so often ignored by photographers. We’ll look at how artists before photography formed the basis for how many modern photographers use sophisticated compositions of complex subjects. Finally, we’ll review many of the visual conventions photographers have used to create and find interesting elements to bring interest to their images, whether they’re shooting landscape, documentary, portraiture, still life, street photography, etc.
