Individual Tutorials

Sessions will focus on digital photography (DSLR, point and shoot, or cell phone), and booking times are flexible for added convenience.

Summer Sessions:

Fall – Spring Session:
Monday & Friday, 9 am – 9 pm
Tuesday – Thursday, 9 am – 2 pm and 6:30 – 9pm

Session are available on a sliding scale:

Topics:

Photo I

Photo I consists of DSLR camera basics and reading imagery. Some topics would include:

  • Using manual camera settings: shutter speed, ISO, and aperture.
  • Choosing lenses and other basic equipment.
  • File management techniques.
  • Framing and image, and using available light

Photoshop 101

In Photoshop 101, students will learn basic color correction techniques in Adobe Camera Raw, and basic post-production techniques in Photoshop.

Objectives:

  • Improve upon knowledge of Camera Raw settings and tools.
  • Discover or continue developing your individual editing style.
  • Become more comfortable with the three core Photoshop tools: dodge and burn, clone stamp, and masking.
  • Expand on the three core tools based on your individual needs and artistic vision.

Photo II

In Photo II you will polish your ability to dissect and interpret imagery and cultivate your own style and practice.

Some topics would include:

  • Intermediate – advanced composition techniques.
  • Making photographs with intention.
  • Deeper dives into genres of interest ie documentary, fine art, portrait etc.

Printing 101

Printing 101 is designed for photographers and digital artists who need to make high-quality/archival prints in both black and white and color. Discussions around what size print best matches an artist’s vision will help students make informed decisions about print sizing, as well as different paper types. Students will also learn how to properly evaluate and handle fresh prints.

Objectives:

  • Learn about printer software, use, and maintenance.
  • Learn about paper types, quality, and weight.
  • Learn about different types of ink.
  • Learn about file preparation for print.
  • Learn Photoshop print settings and resource-saving techniques.

Digital Darkroom: Adobe LR + PS

In Digital Darkroom, students will learn basic and intermediate post-production techniques in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. In Lightroom, students will learn to organize and execute initial overall image correction to a large number of image files. In Photoshop, students will learn more intermediate editing techniques for individual images.

Objectives:

  • Learn how to organize, tag, and copyright images in Adobe Lightroom.
  • Learn basic color correcting techniques in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw.
  • Learn basic and intermediate editing techniques in Adobe Photoshop.

Lighting 101

In Studio Lighting 101, students will learn about standard and specialty lighting equipment and different lighting techniques for portrait and product photography.

Objectives:

  • Become more familiar with lighting equipment.
  • Practice setting up and using the equipment.
  • Experiment with different lighting techniques.
  • Explore mood through lighting setups.

Portfolio

In our Portfolio session, students will receive expert guidance and direction in completing, polishing, and/or presenting their ongoing projects. Students with an interest in bookmaking will be guided through layout design, storytelling techniques, and maintaining clarity. Students interested in installation will similarly be guided through layout design, research, mapping, and production planning. Students without ongoing bodies of work or with general ideas, will be guided through research, outlining, and the beginning phases of planning their presentation.

Objectives:

  • Receive guidance and feedback from the instructor and peers.
  • Craft your own plan of action for future projects.
  • Learn effective storytelling and layout techniques.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of curating a space / artistic experience.
