Course Description:

‘Accessing Photography’, is a six-week online course that will explore Disability as an aesthetic, culture, and identity through photography. We will examine the ways that Disability has been historically othered through the photographic medium ( examples include the work of Francis Galton, Eadweard Muybridge, Charles Eisenmann, etc.) and examine the work of Disabled photographers/artists who reclaim identity and pride through the lens (including Laura Aguilar, Kia LaBeija, Mari Katayama, Felix Gonzalez Torres, and more).

Each session will include a presentation, discussion, time for journaling/reflection, and an optional weekly activity to work on at home (if personal time and capacity allow).

This course will also offer a way to experience how accessibility is a pivotal part of equity, inclusion, safety, leadership, and creativity. This workshop will occur online and will be created to be accessible (with automated closed captioning, access doulas, a participation guide, and visual/verbal description). This will help familiarize participants with online accessibility and help participants bring these accessibility features into their own online spaces.

For additional accessibility requests please email the instructor Megan Bent at BentMeganM@gmail.com at least two weeks before the beginning of the course.
