In Photo I: Beginning Practice students will gain knowledge of the digital camera and lenses, and they will learn digital photography basics such as: how to use manual camera controls, manage a digital workflow, and basic color corrections. Students will also be introduced to different photographic genres each week, with an emphasis on photographic movements and individuals who have assisted with shaping the history of the medium. As they gain knowledge of historical significance in photography, students will complete assignments addressing primary photographic principles including light, color, and space. This course will provide students with a strong foundation on their way to becoming confident, thoughtful, and engaged image-makers. Aside from image-making and shooting, students will be required to complete short reading and writing assignments.
Born and raised in Harlem, NY, Tennille Mack has utilized her exposure to different fields of art to create her own approach of archiving everyday life forms and lived experiences. Her initial mediums have been painting and charcoal but gained a stronger interest in photography after participating in the Cooper Union Portfolio Prep program as a senior in high school. Through this program, she visited the studios of various artists who emphasized the importance of presenting your beliefs and ideas while incorporating with daily occurrences. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History & International Studies from Spelman College. As a participant of the AUC Art History Collective she cultivated her expertise through a myriad of experiences such as studying abroad at Goldsmith’s University of London, interning at leading institutions, Studio Museum in Harlem, The Getty and others. Tennille is continuing to explore her documentarian practice through photography, journalism, and curation.
